We may get a 2hr delay tomorrow

This entry was originally published at Marking Time

Due to some crazy winds and freezing cold temps tomorrow, I would say a two hour delay tomorrow is probable. Heck, the HIGH tomorrow is gonna be 21. Winds will be 15-20mph with 30mph, bringing the wind chill into negative values.

Tomorrow morning will be bad, with it feeling like 0 with the wind factored in. But that won’t be the worst, as the wind will pick up around noon and whip around the snow. Around dismissal time, some flurries will start to come down. Winds will again pick-up during the evening hours and (as with ANYTIME there is freezing cold air coming from the West) a chance for a flurry or two.

As of current conditions, I say there is a 60% chance of a 2hr delay, and 20% chance of actually having off… which would be pretty cool to have a 5-day weekend. BUT remember that because we have today OFF we WILL have school March 16th.

Just joined 88.5 WXPN… they’re in the middle of a fund drive and I decided to join at the ’student’ price of $25. Not much, but figure it’s better than nothing. Plus, now I get to say I’m a member of member-supported radio, 88.5 WXPN!

Why the Job Shadowing Assignment is ridiculous

This entry was originally published at Marking Time

In my Senior Seminar class (and the Junior Seminar classes), there is a mandatory job shadowing assignment. While I think this is cool and a great opportunity, it is assigned in such a wrong way. Here’s why:

First of all, it is mandatory. Making it mandatory forces students to do shadowing, but sometimes this isn’t possible. For example, I know a girl who wants to go in to Broadcast. What is she supposed to do? And what about me? I am hoping to get in to XPN from Jim McGuinn and just shadow a night at Y-rock on XPN. While it’s not the best solution, it is something I am interested in.

Second, the time frame is very tight for us and the person we might shadow: A month. 30 days to find a person, make contact, have approved by the business, have approved by the teacher, have approved and permission slip in from the parent, actually do the assignment, and then write a few things. The assignment also includes an interview and a bunch of forms for the ‘mentor.’

Third, the paper work involved. I, the student, have no problem with work. But when the ‘mentor’ has to do just as much work, it becomes a reason to be declined.. “Hey, can I shadow you?” “Uh, what do I have to do?” “Fill out this 12 page packet, and be interviewed, and give a tour.” …you get the picture.

Fourth, they expect us to take off a day of school for this. Guess what! They have an entire class devoted to this- called INTERNSHIP!!

Fifth, there is not enough guidance by the teacher- at least in my class. No places that will gladly take a student. No contacts given for help. Sorry, but not everyone in school has a parent that owns a big business and has a bunch of contacts.

Sixth, the people we CAN’T shadow: friends, family, and anyone in the district. Yup. If you want to shadow a Elementary School Teacher, have fun finding someone outside the district.

I could list more, but I think this says the bulk of my issues. Oh, and by the way, having a senior seminar class is pretty dumb since people interested in going to college are either on track or are just going to MontCo (not that that is a bad thing, as long as you have a plan). And the class should not be mandatory. It should be what the class name is: a seminar. Have a seminar in the spring for Juniors, then in August for Seniors, introducing college applications, other options, etc. But whatever- what do I know? I just have to go through the whole education system.

Thoughts on the pep rally

This entry was originally published at Marking Time

Without a game, a bonfire, and a wing bowl, we still had the pep rally today. Not complaining about the getting out of class part, but after that it was pretty sad. First of all, with the band again sitting in the wrong section (bottom side facing Horsham Rd, closest to the hallway) as opposed to the place where the band has sat in years past (same side, but on the top and closest to the parking lot). Because of this, it was unable to have each grade sit in their own sections, which ruins part of the fun of the pep rally- each class screaming something to see who has the most school spirit.

Other than the messed up seating, the student body, for whatever reason, could not just be quiet. Naydan even just started with the national anthem because it seemed silence was just too much to ask. They also did not even sing the Alma Mater. Williams did recognize the band, though for whatever reason the Choir was represented in Leadership Court, while the marching band was not… go figure. Wrapping up the whole thing, the slideshow of the senior football players and cheerleaders was pretty sad due to audio problems. The whole ended at 11:45, 15 minutes early.

Overall, it was a sad, unorganized event and that still could have been cool without the game.

Great college site for Juniors and Seniors

This entry was originally published at Marking Time

I know I haven’t posted much lately… Oh well. I’ve been busy. But now with marching band over I actually have a little bit of time to relax in my days. I just wanted to post, though, about this great site that I got a little ad for in Gmail when I was looking a college’s email: collegedata.com. It is ran by some bank and may not look like it, but actually does have a pretty good amount of information. The best feature that makes it stand out from the rest? It lets you know your chances of getting in, for free. There are some pay services that do this using better methods, but CollegeData does a good job nonetheless. It uses both data given from colleges and students who have applied to estimate your chances. You enter things like GPA, SAT, and how many clubs and such you participate in. You can do a college search and see right away your chances, from a “Reach”, to “Maybe”, to a “Good Bet.” Pretty convenient. Also lets you see a college profile with a table of credentials and how they weigh everything- kinda like College Board does, but in an easier-to-read format. Overall, I highly recommend any seniors who have or are about to apply and any Juniors starting to look at colleges. Though remember, the site ain’t perfect: I received an acceptance letter from Millersville and they rated me a “Maybe.”
